| I have recently decided to homeschool my 9-year-old son, who is bilaterally severly to profoundly hearing impaired. I have been happy with his education to this point, but think he could be doing more. The thing I am unhappy with is the fact that the Regional Day School for the Deaf is located in some of the roughest public schools in town. Last year in my sons school two 5th graders were arrested, one for pulling a shank on another kid and one for taking pot to school. This scared me enough to consider pulling my son and moving him into our home school. However, I knew with this he would probably be placed in a special ed and forgotten about! It was at this point that I began considering homeschooling. I am a certified early childhood, special ed, and deaf ed teacher and figured that I would be more qualified teaching my own child than anyone! I must admit, however, that I am scared to death of this decision. I have no idea where to start or how to do this. I am looking for some advice, if anyone has any to share. |
