Stained glass pictures are fun to color and make a cheerful winter decoration. Here in the Pacific Northwest, our winters are pretty gloomy, so any bit of light and color is welcome.

Designing Original Stained Glass Pictures
Stained glass pictures are super easy to make. Little kids can produce spectacular results.
Take some ordinary printer/typing paper. I cut mine in half as I have small window panes.

Draw a picture. I like to start with a simple, bold image in the center, a star in this case.
To create the stained glass effect, take your pencil and go for a walk. Just draw a long, squiggly, loopy line all around the paper. I used sharp turns in this picture, but some of the others have smooth curves.
End your line by connecting it to another line, or drawing off the edge of the paper.

Begin coloring the picture. Start in the center.
Markers will produce the most vivid pictures, but crayons and colored pencils also work well.

Continue coloring in the picture. Work in a circle around the center.
Try not to fill in adjoining spaces with the same color. The more colors you use, the easier it will be to avoid this; use at least five.

When the picture is completely colored in (I've left a border on this one, but you can go to the edges of the paper), take a thick black pen and trace over all the lines in the picture.

Take the picture to the kitchen, if you aren't already there.
You'll need a cotton ball and some oil. Ordinary cooking oil works fine. If you want to leave the pictures up for many months, I'd recommend mineral oil instead, as vegetable oils will turn rancid and smell over time.
Pour a small puddle of oil on to the back of the picture. Rub the oil around the paper until the surface is completely saturated.

I used a slightly different method to draw this picture.
I drew the basic shape and then I traced it onto my paper. I moved the star around and I traced it about six times in an overlapping pattern. Instead of coloring the picture out from the center, I worked from one side.

When all the pictures are finished, use tape to hang them in the window.
