Lego, Duplo and Mega Bloks

Plastic Building Bricks

A minimum of 2,000 blocks are necessary to build anything bigger than your hand. I'd recommend 5,000 to 10,000 bricks if you have multiple children or an extremely tactual budding engineer.

Our bricks live in a 58 quart Sterilite container. There's well over 3,000 bricks in it and it's not half full.

Lego Bricks

Lego bricks are probably the most well known plastic building bricks. I'd love to recommend them. Unfortunately, in recent years, Lego has really turned away from the classic bricks. It has become increasingly difficult to buy collections of the building bricks. The available buckets are small and expensive, and Lego keeps changing the name they're marketed under. For awhile they were called Lego Freeplay, now it seems to be Lego Creator.

Green Baseplate
by Lego Systems, Inc.
Manufacturer's age: 18 months - 5 years

Editorial Review from Amazon.com

This 15-inch-square green base plate provides a building surface for any DUPLO set. It is made of the same sturdy, impact-resistant plastic as other DUPLO toys, and has smooth, rounded edges. DUPLO sets are designed for use by toddlers (ages 18 months to 5 years), and have bigger pieces and more rounded shapes than traditional LEGO pieces, so they can accommodate the needs of younger users. If you are shopping for a baby, try the LEGO PRIMO sets, which are even bigger and easier to handle. -- Katherine Ferguson

Mega Bloks

Mega Bloks are fully compatible with Lego bricks and much more affordable. I sometimes find the 600 piece buckets for less than $10.00 at Wal-Mart. Mega Bloks are widely available; Toys R US, K-Mart and Wal Mart carry them.

Mega Bloks are available in four different sizes. The smallest is compatible with regular Lego bricks. The next largest size is the same as Duplo. Then there are two sizes larger yet, including huge bricks for babies.
